Okay someone is selling copper wire. There is a total of 1,000 ft of copper wire and it is brand new and the highest bid is at $74 right now. About how much is copper wire a lb and how much should i buy it for?
Not knowing what gauge the wire is, this question can't be answered. 1,000' of 12 awg THHN is going to weigh a whole lot less than 1,000' of 4/0 bare SD copper. If you know the wire gauge you can look up the weight per thousand feet on manufacturer web sites. Then do a check on the spot commodity price to see if the salvage copper is worth it. In most cases, cable itself is worth more than the copper in it to an electrical installer. This is because the insulation and code rating on it makes it usable in specific situations. Honestly, if you don't understand these basic commodity specs, you are unlikely to be able to successfully profit on this sort of transaction. Bear in mind you are probably bidding against two groups of people -- those who do understand what it is worth (and will drop out when bids exceed the market value for profit) and others like you who are in the dark and will overpay. People can never profit on buying and selling commodities for profit unless they have a real understanding of the market for that material. You don't, so you should back out of this auction.
Copper wire will fetch you $1 a pound at the scrap yard unstripped... keep that in mind whilst bidding
