Question:

Cost of replacing wheel bearings?

What would it cost to have the wheel bearings replaced on a 98 Mercury Sable? Also, how bad is it to drive on busted ones? My car is making a grinding noise when I turn corners and I have been told that this might be caused by bad bearings.

Answer:

It definately sounds like the bearings, or hub assemblies (as the repair shops call it) when I bought mine, they were $105 each and i needed both up front done. Labor is extra depending on where you go, unless u know someone with air tools who'll do it for you. oh.. and i drove on mine for about 3 months, which is not recommended, but i had to wait until i had enough money to get them fixed.
that does not sound like a bearing cause if it was a bearing you would here noise any time you move...if its make a noise when you turn its the u-joints that's an expensive job for sure.i had that same problem with my car and they had to replace the u-joints and the boot covers that go over them...$400 bucks....be warned that i did not take me car in to shop till it was too late and my front wheel fell off..lucky i was just in town driving slow cause it it would have been on the freeway, wow!!!!! look under the car behind the front wheels there like a black boot cover (like the one the bottom on a shifter in a Manuel shift car) you can see if there torn,if they are its the u-joints for sure...(check both sides)
Mine were looking to be 205 a piece but mine were on a suv to. But a a sable I bet your lookin about 125-150 a piece. As for the response above he is talkin about a c-v joint not a u joint. a u joint is in the drive shaft not anywhere near the wheel. I would suggest getting the bearings and c-v joint check as it could be eaither or
To do it your self, about ?25 for the taper bearings and the price of a pot of intense melting aspect grease. that's an uncomplicated interest once you've some knowledge of motor vehicle upkeep. At a storage, the price of labour might want to be about ?60 - ?70 plus elements and VAT. In entire round ?one hundred.
