Question:

Could you have a solar panel in space?

Could you have a solar panel in space that would transmit electricity remotely? Maybe have some kind of receiving antenna to pick up the energy? Perhaps there could be a string of them orbiting the Earth? Why wouldn't that work?

Answer:

Wireless okorder . May be in future research will give a means to harness solar energy from space.
Amazing how antique technology is so easily forgotten. Nikola Tesla first introduced the idea of wireless energy transmission in 89 and proved it by 899 in Colorado Springs, CO. He proved the Earth itself was a conductor of electricity. He also successfully conducted long-distance wireless energy transmission and reception. He wrote about the ability to wirelessly send electricity from a few central sources using longitudinal waves and magnetic flux all around the globe to be received at any point therefore electricity could be accepted by all uniformly. Although the means by which to do it was extremely far fetched, his theories are solid.
Hi There Solar panels work better in space than in the atmosphere and wireless transmission of power is now becoming possible but rarely practical. Currently more practical would be orbiting geo stationary large scale mirrors focusing light on panels on earth. In another 50 years who knows? Energy being transmitted wirelessly generates heat and radiation. I suspect that if a powerful enough solar array to meet earthly needs was put in orbit then transmitting that sort of power through the atmosphere would cause issues all of its own. Regards vk4ari
There are thousands of satellites in space with solar panels, but none of them are designed as power stations. Transmitting power using radio frequencies would be profoundly inefficient. A string of satellites orbiting the Earth would be incredibly expensive. Even if solar power were to reach economic viability, we would put them on the ground where we could use them. Given the amount of advanced renewable sources of energy already being developed there is absolutely no reason to launch a power plant into space. Wow - watched the youtube video... that is possible the worst invention ever and I hope it never catches on. The last thing we need are retards who are too lazy to plug in their phones wasting electricity on highly inefficient wireless transfer when many parts of the world are facing energy shortages. Regular chargers are already bad enough because they constantly drain electricity even when not in use. I am definitely not an environmental saint but this thing is just stupid.
Absolutely. Many satellites and other spacecraft that have been launched throughout history carry solar panels to power themselves. The International Space Station alone has hundreds of square meters of solar panels. Transmitting the power from one place to another wirelessly is a bit more difficult, but not fundamentally impossible. So far we don't have any good technology to do it over long distances. But we're getting there. One proposed future source of power is 'solar power satellites', orbiting devices that would collect sunlight and turn it into a microwave laser that would be fired down to the Earth and collected in a giant dish kind of like a radio telescope. The idea is that this would be non-polluting, environmentally friendly, reliable, would help to boost investment in space technologies, and wouldn't take up the large amounts of land area required for traditional solar power. However, some people have argued that it is a bad idea on the basis that if the laser accidentally missed the dish, and came down in an inhabited area, it might cause human fatalities or damage to the environment or human artifacts.
