Anyone who has been around power machinery knows it is not a good thing to grind without wearing goggles or safety glasses! Do you think Nascar would allow a one eyed Tony Stewart drive in any series? The answer is NO! Depth perception is a must in close contact automobile racing; no exceptions. The mirror lockup function is designed to prevent camera shake (mostly for intricate work). The function locks the mirror up so that when you press the shutter button the mirror is already up out of the way.
There should be an adjustment for the depth of the thread. Make sure your dies are sharp. You may need to buy new ones.
