Question:

Different types of exhaust system?

What are all the different types out there. Ive heard of straight pipe, x pipes, catback, muffler tip, header backSo if someone can please clarify them for me and tell me pricesAlso which gives the most hp or best sound

Answer:

Different Types Of Mufflers
a catback is the part of the exhaust from the catalytic converter to the end. These dont improve performance as the bottleneck of exhaust fumes will still be in the manifold and pipe leading to the cat box, these catback. These make the car sound powerful but lend almost nothing to its speed. If you buy a full system, it will include the manifold, pipe and cat box, which will mean you have a wider pipe for the whole thing, which reduces the pressure in the exhaust, allowing the exhaust from the engine to be transported away more freely. I would strongly recommend the full system if you plan on modding your car for performance. You can even just get the cat box for now, then buy the rest later on and install it. However, if you know nothing of cars, I would recommend getting it all done at once, so you save on mechanics labour cost. A good next performance improver would be getting a performance air intake, which is another good 'bolt on' mod which increases performance. remember to admit both to your insurer, otherwise you stand to have your insurance voided if you crash and they find it.
Strait pipeno mufflers Cat back system replaced from the catalytic converter back Header back system replaced from the headers back X pipe crossover system to equal the pressures in a dual exhaust system, eliminating some imbalance. roughly forms the shape of an x in the exhaust piping. h pipe same, but forms the shape of an h. muffler tip/exhaust tip the final, visible portion of the exhaust. Usually chrome, does very little for performance, but can change sound slightly. Dual exhaust necessary on motors when the extra flow of a second pipe is needed. (the presence of a dual exhaust does not mean that the car needs a dual system, most don't) Y pipe the portion of some exhausts where pipes meet and form a rough y shape Prices are too variable to give a ball park. Results depend on vehicle.
