Question:

Distinguishing between Mica Muscovite and Quartz?

I have a hard time distinguishing between Mica (Muscovite) and Quartz when I'm looking at the two of them. I need to distinguish between them during my lab tomorrow, but I'm not really confident in my ability to do so, since they both can be whitish with a vitreous luster and white streaks, to the best of my knowledge... help?

Answer:

Quartz is composed of silica SiO2 moles SiO2 = 1.40 g / 60.0835 g/mol= 0.0233 moles of oxygen = 2 x 0.0233 = 0.0466 oxygen atoms = 0.0466 mol x 6.02 x 10^23 =2.81 x 10^22
