Question:

Do ferrets smell really bad?

I asked a question before asking what pet I should getLots of people suggested a ferret (I'd probably get two) anywaysI love ferrets, I think they are adorable! But every time I see them in the petstore it stinks all around the cageAlso once my cousin was watching his friends ferrets and I held them Nd played with them and they didn't smell as badSo is it just how you take care of them or want? And do they claw and bite? Can you litter box train them? Are they really expensive? If you can give me lots of info you'll be the best answer! Thanks!!

Answer:

They do have a musky odor, but it shouldn't be any more overpowering than the odor of a dog or catThe reason they smell in the petstore is for multiple reasons: -they use disposible bedding: it tends to hold odors and usually isn't cleaned often-they feed wet food to the babies (a good idea) but wet food tends to be stinkier-the food that is fed is lower quality (usually Marshalls) which makes them smellier Ferrets don't smell if cared for properlyThese are my tips: -Scoop litter dailyUse ferret safe pelleted litter-Don't use disposable bedding (Carefresh) in the cage, just use blankets, etc -Wash beds and blankets weekly in hypoallergenic detergent -Don't overbathe your ferret1-2 times a year is plentyOverbathing causes the skin oil glands to overproduce, making the ferret smellier -Feed a good dietFerrets are obligate carnivores and can only digest meatThey cannot digest fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, milk products, and sugarsFoods high in these ingredients are not able to be properly processed by your ferret, and so his poo and his coat will be quite stinkyChoose a kibble that has at least 35% protein, 20% fat, and less than 3% fiberAt least 4 of the first 6 ingredients should be meatThey don't claw, but do need to be trained not to nipFerrets play by biting and nipping and it's important to teach them that biting hurts usThey can be litterbox trained, but will never be 100% in the boxThey are very expensive petsThe average start up cost is around $500 (including the price of the ferret)This does not include vet visits, emergency funds, etcI just spent around $500 to take my 4 to the vet, and that was just for exams and vaccinations.
You can make any number of casseroles with hash browns that can go with a lot of mealsI like one with lots of cheese.
Anything you'd serve with a baked potato will go good with hashbrownsI make hashbrowns from time to time instead of baked taters or mashedI think steak and hash browns go very nicely together.
Hash browns and ; Ham Cheese Gravy Sausage casserole Chicken Ham casserole Ground beef
I like mac and cheese with hash browns and turkey bacon.
