I have a 1997 base 3.8 Camaro and Im looking to put some sort of aftermarket exhaust system in it to give it better sound and more horse power. I don‘t have a catalytic converter in it and I‘m wondering if i need one to have the exhaust put in? Thanks.
Most likely if you need to get your vehicle saftied you would need one. The reason you would is because the it acts like a catalyst in Chemistry terms which turns the the bad carbon your car is putting out into nitrogen and water which is already natural. This is why you would need one to get it to pass emissions. But if your not concerned with the environment you can get an exhaust (not sure if they come with cat or not) but if they do take it off and weld on a piece of pipe if you really want no CAT. My brother did that with his 95 Trans am lt1
You would have to to have a servo drive motor with a magnetic clutch release(for regular riding) attached to the throttle control on the carb bank.Turn power on to activate the clutch-then dial servo motor up to desired speed and have an inter lock on the brake only-that way you can downshift to pass on the highway without breaking your rpm's.That would be some real cool SH*T. Now that I have given you my idea-you make it work-I'll hook it up (make two,1 for my 929) and maybe we can patent it and be able to retire. At least let me know if you did it.I will even design the mount for it to fit up over the front of the gas tank.Just a simple touch screen with a on-off touch and a + or - horizontal light bar touch.Sheez we ain't even partners yet and I'm tellin you what to do.
total waste of money if an exhaust system could give more power the manufacturers would fit it as standard, you have to balance it , rework the engine and reprogram the ECU to make any difference
Several years ago My father bought an after market cruise control for his Kia that wired in without imbedded systems, it may take a little adapting, this one used a magnetic sensor that you might get to put on a wheel for balancing, magnet on wheel, sensor on front fork. That kit cost $110 in 2004 and I put it in 1 afternoon
Check your state laws, some states like Florida don't make you pass emmission and safety inspections. If you live in a state like Florida you can very well install an exhaust with no catalytic converter with the added benefit of a few extra horsepower.
