Question:

Do i need a light on my tank?

Do i need a light on my tank which is used to house fry till they grow, my local pet store has a light that can go in perfect for my small breeding tank, but what do lights do (sorry if this sounds stupid thing to ask) Do they just light up the tank or do they heat it? (i already have a heater in by the way)many thank's steven ;)

Answer:

a light serves two purposes 1) puts light in the tank so you can see the fish 2) live plants need the light the light in the room should be enough for the fry. I believe that fish prefer to have the lights off.
Well a light is mostly for planets. But it also depends on the fry some but maybe a low light is a good idea, medium or bright light is a good idea if your tank doesn't get any natural sunlight
You really dont need a light since you have a heater. I have heard that it will help the fry grow but i am not sure. I know it will create a lot of bacteria that is probaly going to be too much for your fry so i would say no and not get a light.
Unless you are growing live plants, you have no need for a light. And yes, a light can heat up a tank. Always use florescent bulbs with a fish tank. These are cool bulbs that will not alter temperature. Incandescent lights, on the other hand, will heat up a tank considerably. No fish will enjoy the temperature fluctuations from an incandescent bulb. Plus, you save power using florescent.
The fish can see fine and go about their business by normal room light. Only plants need extra lighting, in an unplanted tank the lights are for the owners benefit, so they can see the fish better. 2 of my guppy tanks have no lights, and I have a LOT of guppies. Ian
