Question:

do LCD monitors have the same affect on eyesight as CRTs?

I want to know if LCD monitors effect eyesight as CRTs or not. I have to stay in front of a computer screen 6 - 7 hours per day. Does that have a real bad effect on my eyesight?

Answer:

Monitors of any sort do NOT damage the eyesight. This is a myth. What they do do is strain the eyesight. This is something your eyes recover from but can give you headaches etc/cause temporary blurring at teh end of the day. LCD monitors are easier on the eyes in many ways that CRT monitors , not least of this is that they don't have any flicker which is important if you sufer from migraine. 6 to 7 hours a day is less than most computer professionals stay in front of a screen and if this damaged the eyesight the world would be full of blind computer staff suing their companies. Big companies keep a very close eye on the latest research on thsi sort of thing and issue guidance as to how to sit etc but long term damage is mainly to things like the neck/back/fingers if you don't sit properly or you use for this long on a laptop because you can't get teh screen and keyboard at teh correct angle.
If you do sit the appropriate distance from your monitor / tv, you shouldn't get eye damage. I asked my eye doctor once and she told me that as so long as you are at an appropriate distance from your tv / monitor it wouldn't affect your eyesight. That's what my eye doctor told me i'm not sure if its true or not
