Question:

Do manual transmissions last longer than automatics?

I would like to know which transmission will last longer if properly maintained. Also, any maintenance tips for both?

Answer:

if u live in an area where the roads suck and has winding roads with potholes and is hilly then manual transmission is what u need. if u live in an area that has highways and straight roads with no potholes and such where u only do braking. automatic transmission is better. it is all about the stress that the car gets, auto does not handle corners, excessive braking and such well as it is forced to engine brake alot. manual in this case is better. i would go for manual either way because u do not have to maintain or change any oil for the life of the transmission. it is also better on fuel economy
Only American cars have good transmissions? Ever heard of Chrysler? They're notorious for having junk transmissions that need to be rebuilt many times because they keep going out. To answer your question though, they will both go for a very long time if not abused and if they are properly maintained, but you will get a little better gas mileage with the manual transmission.
In my experience, a manual transmission has less chance of failing providing abuse is not a factor. There are a number of reasons for this. AUTOMATIC: much more complicated, uses numerous electronic sensors to control it, fluid is under more stress, alot more parts MANUAL: service intervals are less frequent, clutch is likly to go before transmission With that said, there are certain models of transmissions both automatic and manual that have design flaws and are at a higher risk of failing. This is more commonplace with an automatic. FYItodays automatics are JUST as fuel efficent as a manual transmission HTH
