Question:

do performance exhaust systems have to be louder?

If its just all about relieving back pressure why can‘t someone design a system that is as quiet, or nearly as stock? Is it really out performing oem or does all that noise fool you into thinking your going faster. Sometimes it seems like little boys with the playing cards in the spokes on the bicycle. after all the power is made on the inside of an engine is‘nt it?

Answer:

1.) I would yell and tell my son to get out then I would grab my cell phone 2.) my cat Magz 3.) my purse as long as my son was out of the house safely as he would be the most important of all but he is not always at my house as I am divorced and he is at his dad's part time as well!
If my kids were there, them first, of course. Since I live alone, I would go for photos and records. Since I am a 9-1-1 supervisor I can tell you to forget all of the above (except your kids) and just get the hell out.
Yes they make exhaust that are flow threw and some what quiet. If your reasoning is true that Y do race cars have open tuned exhaust. Ever been to drag racing only quite 1s is some 1 running there moms car.
the idea is to get the exhaust out straight away. if you have mufflers in the way that can reduce performance. but the fart cans people put on imports are just to make them sound like they have a performance exhaust, but don't actually do anything.
As far as street performance, not as loud as many are. The decibels emitted depends on the overall muffler length and shape, interior baffles and their angles and length, piping length and perforations, positioning of all noise reducing metal and materials inside the muffler, design of performance mufflers is ongoing and ever changing. Maximum performance from a normally aspirated engine will usually be found with an open exhaust, even racing headers have optimal primary length and diameter ending in a collector with a diameter of three to four inches and the length of the collector is important as well. Most rural drag strip settings allow open headers, suburban settings will often require mufflers on race cars and the noise level at a certain distance cannot exceed xx decibels, all things being equal between rural and suburban settings like temperature, wind, humidity, etc, the open headers will usually be a tenth or more quicker. And in drag racing, a tenth of a second is forever.
