Doctors can choose what they specialize in - they can do family medicine (this is who you'd go to for a check up), obstetrics, or surgery. Vets can choose to be more knowledgeable in certain areas, but their entire practice can't be specific. They do shots, blood work, surgeries, regular check ups, teeth cleaning. If you don't want to do surgery, then don't become a vet. A vet tech is more likely up your alley.
The vet nurses do the check ups and non surgical things, maybe you should consider vet nursing? Although i think the may also have to assist in surgery
