Question:

Do we still need exhaust fans with a Vanee heat exchanger?

We are buying a house with a heat exchanger and are wondering if we should still vent the range fan to the outside? As well as the laundry and bathroom fans, should we exhaust these to the outside? Can these systems work along side or will the fan cancel out the work the Vanee is doing. Also what are the ports in bathrooms, kitchen, are these supplies or exhausts?

Answer:

absolutely those items should still vent to the outside--those vents have nothing to do with the operation of the heat exchanger---most bathroom vents have a flap that only opens when the fan is on built in just before the exhaust hose - when the fan is off the flap closes so you don't lose heat or ac. as for the ports in the bathroom and kitchen i am betting that they are the vents that your exchanger sends the air thru after being heated or conditioned..the main job of the range fan is to remove smoke from cooking or in the case of a gas stove/oven to remove gas fumes during use.
