Question:

Do you need a new exhaust system for a new muffler?

I want to get a DC sports 3.0 inch Universal Muffler Round Can Straight Tip but i don‘t know if i just need the muffler, or if i need a whole new exhaust system. i have a 2007 Chevy Cobalt SS S/C so it‘s obviously a new exhaust.

Answer:

you do not need a new exhaust system. Add the muffler for the sound. But most small engines will not benefit from exhaust improvements unless you add significant engine modifications. You will see an improvement in sound but not in performance from any exhaust modifications by themselves.
It should just bolt on or you might need a adapter pipe to go from the old system to the new muffler inlet. I would check with chevy to see if this voids there warrenty. If it does I wouldnt do it just because thoes mufflers add nothing when it comes to power. I would keep it stock.
If you need an entire new exhaust system, then you have selected the wrong muffler. Your supplier of the DC sports muffler should be able to provide an adapter to fit the muffler to your current exhaust system.
