Question:

Does air intake increase gas mileage?

Car is 2007 Dodge Magnum, we‘ve been told that we don‘t need to install the whole kit for it to make difference. Our mechanic said all you have to do is change the air filter but my husband and I have read mixed reviews. How can we know if and how much difference it would be to know if it‘s worth the cost?

Answer:

First poster is correct, not a major gain, but it does help a bit. if you don't mind cleaning it ( very simple to do) then over time it will also save some because it is a one time fee, the throw-ways you have to buy each time. The frequency of cleaning is kinda depended on the conditions, if you do drive dusty or dirt roads they need cleaninf more that just hi-way driving.
i bought a kn cold air intake and ive noticed the preformance difference and it increases the mpg by like 1/2 if that but you never have to replace the filter you just have to clean it every 40k miles so you save money with it either way
minimal. if any. your mechanic is right. in your case (OEM), a performance filter will give you the same results. --------------------------- fresh air mods are usualy done for two reasons. 1) increasing oxygen content via fresh air; you have a computer managed, fuel injected motor. it already adjusts fuel mixtures for different conditions via feed back from the o2 sensors. the condition of exhaust gasses, via the o2 sensors, tell the management system how much oxygen is/was available for a given amount of fuel. so it doesn't matter if it's a hot day or a cool one. air density is not a factor here (air density/temperature will dictate oxygen content within give unit of air). prolly already have fresh air induction anyway. 2) restrictive air intake ducting; the other reason one might do this is if one has determined the air flow is restrictive. and that's just not going to be a factor with your vehicle in OEM config. ----------------------------- however, they do look cool and are a very functional part of a performance upgrade *package* that increases fuel delivery.
