Question:

Does anyone know about dodge charger transmission?

I‘m looking to buy my first car within the next few months and one of my options a dodge charger, but I have been hearing that it has a lot of transmission problems and the transmission fails after a couple thousand miles, does anyone own a doge charger or has owned one and have had any experience with this problem??

Answer:

Jacob is right. I work at a dealership and the Charger and 300 with the Hemi have the NAG1 trans. Very few problems, most common is the leaking electrical connector plug which is covered under warranty. If there are any problems it is with the the driver's trying to street race them or add performance mods.
I agree that a 440 big block is the best engine for a '73 Charger. A larger car like that should have a big, high torque V8 to get it up to speed. Like a previous poster said, the Mopar engines in '73 had low compression so they didn't make as much horsepower as in previous years. If I was restoring one I'd find a healthy, built 440 Magnum with around 400-500 horsepower depending on how much oomph you want. I personally would go with a Hemi 4-speed trans with a Pistol Grip shifter, but a 727 auto would be a great choice too if you don't like manuals. A 440 actually shouldn't be any higher maintenance then a 318. The 440 was used in Dodge trucks for many years and is a reliable workhorse. The 0-60 for a stock '73 Charger 440 with 3.55 gears would probably be around 6.8 secs, with a top speed of around 130. Some guys put 5 and 6-speed transmissions in old muscle cars, which isn't a bad idea at all.
The transmission is a Mercedes supplied unit. So ask yourself a question, do you hear about Mercedes Benz transmission issues? And go look it up to, it is supplied by Mercedes, it was one of the benefits with the Daimler merger.
