Question:

Does ceramic insulation cause cancer?

I work in industrial construction as a heat treater. Besides all the normal hazard we often use ceramic insulation to insulate of welds that we are stress relieving. It doesnt contain aspestos but i know the stuff has to be bad for me. Some people get scared of the stuff, but ive been working with it for so long now that i doesnt seem to bother me. Perhaps my lungs are made of steel. Help me

Answer:

The ceramic contains silica. Fine sillica dust is an irritant to the lungs, and overexposure over many years can be a bad thing. If it were me, and I had concerns over dust in the workplace, I would purchase a P1 or P2 type respirator and use it. I did some reading on the internet a few months ago about the toxicity of the various dusts, and I learned a lot from it. I did not know how dangerous some dusts could be (with the worst being asbestos). From now on, I won't do any form of maintenance that generates dust without wearing a respirator. Your health is precious, remember that.
EVERYTHING causes cancer when you inhale a lot of it (except air). I'd wear a face mask no matter what, because it'll just be a couple years before there's a class-action law suit involving it, you know?
Ceramic fibre is made up of Alumina, Silica and zircon. The melt of the above said material is made as a fibre. This fibrous material has submicron sized particles No mask or filters can help you. Do one thing. eat more fruits, Jaggery and sweets, they can save u to some extent. But wearing some mask or filter can prevent your lung from particles up to 2Microns.
