Question:

Does cool air intake increase HP?

My cousin wants to put a new air intake on his charger 6.1 engine he‘s getting the mopar air intake. He‘s just wondering if you get hp if he gets it? He says he does. Does it get him more horsepower and if yes how much?

Answer:

Go to the mopar parts web site and look at the dyno chart. The problem with some CAIsis that you can get a few more horse power at really high RPM, which is good for race cars with the right gears, but you may actually loose a few HP down in the lower RPM range where the engine is when you drive on the street. I have seen some cars have a huge power loss below 3000 RPM because of a CAI. The driver liked the look and sound though, so he kept it!
With a 6.1, you will see an increase in power across the board but probably not more than 3hp at peak power. A cold air intake is a type of intake. Which brand you get is more important. If it's a fully tapered, heat shielded, high radius piece from a reputable builder, you'll probably see as much as 8-10 hp. I assume, however, that he's buying one from auto zone or some random mess like that. Probably no more than 3hp. See, here's the problem with CAIs. Yes, they draw air from a colder source, but the material of the tubing is less heat resistant and will soak up almost as much heat as the stock piece. Just tell him to go ahead. Let him think that he's cool. He'll never notice it. But you can't tell him that.
Then real answer is that when an engine can get air that is relatively cooler and faster than what it is currently getting it will make more power. Cooler air is denser and will help the engine make more power. So if the factory intake is restrictive and drawing hot air from the engine compartment then a cold air intake positioned to receive cooler air from the outside will make more power regardless of its fuel delivery method (fuel injector(s) or carburetor(s)). I do not know of any online dyno results for a dodge charger but you can google Stage 1 through Stage 4 Mustang and find the dyno results for similar modifications to a late model Mustang from American Muscle.
