Does copper react with quartz crystal?
No, they are not real diamonds. Herkeimer diamonds is a lay person's / rock collector's name for a double-terminated quartz crystals found Herkimer County, New York and surrounding areas. They are found in cavities that occur in dolostone layers that are part of the Cambrian-age, Little Falls Dolostone. Although they are not diamonds, the exceptional clarity of Herkeimer diamonds and rarity of doubly terminated quartz crystals make Herkeimer diamonds very popular among rockhounds and rock and mineral collectors. As a result, they are far from worthless. For example, current (2010) prices for an individual Herkeimer diamond can range from 10 to over a 100 dollars depending on size, clarity, and the presence or absence of flaws. Clusters of Herkeimer diamonds can sell for over 200 - 250 dollars.
yes i am a certified gemologist from the best school on the planet! a herkeimermer diamond is quartz but you have to define worthless! this internet would not exist nor your favorite watch withoutworthless quartz!
I've seen them sold in rock shops, and they always have a higher price than other clear, white quartz crystals of similar size. But don't quit your day job if you inherit a box of Herkeimer diamonds.
Quartz, but not necessarily worthless.
