Question:

does cvt transmission use gears?

and what‘s more reliable if driven the same, cvt or dct (continuously variable transmission / dual clutch transmission)? I know cvt may not prduce the same amount of low end power/torque as dct but yeah Idk I‘m kind of new to this, I would like to know more. Please give me your inputs

Answer:

Nope CVT transmissions use the same concepts that scooters use a belt around a cone shaped cylinder with weights on it the faster the cylinder turns the farther out the weights get thrown changing the pitch of the cone that the belt rides on CVT transmission have less parts to fail BUT they dont have a very high hold strength for high end applications
