A lot of cars handle well (Im in Michigan, like 10 of snow here). I drive a Mercury mountaineer and it is great (but an SUV). Lincolns are great and so are Pontiac Grand Prix (especially the wide track model). A big part of the handling is the tires you put on. Make sure they have good traction- if they are bald you will slip and slide right off the road with any car.

Subaru's have one of the best AWD systems on the market and paired with a good set of winter tires you will have very little trouble in any conditions. And winter tires rated for snow and ice these days have been tested to start and stop just as good as studded tires so no need to ruin roads with studs that need to be replaced every year. Just invest in good tires and they will last you a few winters easily.
