I have sub-floors in my condo and want to put in a hardwood floor and replace the interior doors. Should I install the new doors first before the new floor, or, the floors first then the doors? Thanks, M
Does not matter. Just so you have a sample of the wood for the door installer. It will be a little safer to do the doors fist. Just in case the door person drops any thing. But it does not matter. The wood floor installer will have a jam saw to cut the door trim. The only thing you can not do is to have both installer there at the same time
Instal the hard wood floors first so you know you will have enough room at the bottom of the door to accomidate. Otherwise you may instal the doors first and find you either have too little space or too much space for the floors, in which case you will be taking the doors out to re hang them anyway. Why do double work ? Good luck .
YOU MUST install the floors before the doors., BUT!!! if you are replacing the casing and door jams as well as the doors, you will need to install the jam (door frame) first. A) door frame B)flooring c) casing 4) door Doors come in standard sizes. And the new floor will lower the clearance distance in the original doorway. you would need to recut the new frame to fit. When you go to install the doors you should allow aprox 1/2 clearance to allow for air circulation etc. Most of the time you can cut or sand the door at the bottom to achieve this. If you are putting new doors into the old doorway, make sure the hinges will line up and the doors thickness will work in that frame. I am a carpenter, If you have any more questions or need advice feel free to email me. another reason the frame is first is so it doesn't sit on the floor, Hardwood floors expand and contract, this could cause the frame to move and the door may, scrape, stick etc.
This type of question is one that has 2 different answers. If you want a easier flooring installation install the floor first (you see this done alot if it is an unfinished wood floor), if you want a easier door installation install the door first. Either set the height with a scrap piece of the wood floor (or) install the door to the floor and cut the bottoms with a saw. Normally, the doors are installed first (so the floor will not be damaged) but it can be done either way.
I install floors. I remove the doors so that they are out of the way. if you are installing new jambs as well as was mentioned before it is better to have them in place so that they can be properly cut for clearance on the finished floor.
