Question:

EGR Valve...?

Exactly what is an EGR valve where is it located?

Answer:

It does not help warm the engine. It is shut off at idle, and opens as some others have said when cruising. If it opens at idle, it will cause the engine to run rough.
if your talking about a car EGR valve, it's used for the smog system in your car...if you need help you need to specify what make and model of car you have... with a faulty EGR vale you will not pass a smog test and it will make your car run rough... go buy one at the local automotive store and locate it under your hood, they are very simple to install...
EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. Nothing more than to help out the environment. Simply puts exhaust gasses back through the motor to reduce (NOx). Since the exhaust gas is very stable (inert) it will not burn again, lowering combustion chamber temps when introduced. As mentioned it is a ufo looking piece, usually located in the engine bay where it can be seen.
In todays engines , fuel economy is a big issue. An exhaust Gas valve will do the following. At cruise speed, when there is not as much load on the engine the fuel mixture will lean out to save on fuel emissions, but the combustion temp will rise with a lean mix, so to control this the egr valve will throttle exhaust gas into the intake air leaning out the air and lowering the combustion temp. exhaust gas will not burn again! its burnt already, mechanical valves were easy to check with a vacum pump. but newer valves are controled by the engine control system and you should consult your service manual for proper inspection procedures
EGR valve is the Exhaust Gas Recycling valve. This is for when a motor is cold and needs extra fuel to keep running. Back in the days of chokes you would restrict the air going into the carburator to make the car run richer. With fuel injection cars more fuel is added to the engine to richen the mixture. This richer mixture causes the exhaust to have unburnt hydrocarbons, meaning not good for the environment. The EGR opens and allows some of the exhaust to be added back into the intake to be reburned. Once the engine warms up to operating tempurature the EGR closes. The EGR should be a UFO looking item about the diameter of a big coffee cup. Should be brownish metal, lightly rusted from the heat. A a steel pipe, around 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter, will run from the EGR to the exhaust at the back of the engine. Some EGR valves are on the front of the engine, some at the rear. Most frontwheel drive cars with will be right above the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine. Good luck and happy holidays
