Question:

Endodontic fiber posts: glass vs quartz. Can you explain composition and manufacturing differences?

I don't ask about clinical and commercial differences, but I would like to know more from the industrial, chemical and physical point of view. What are the real differences between glass and quartz fibers? For example, a typical quartz fiber post is the RTD Double-Tapered Quartz Post (RTD Geneve/Dentsply International) and typical glass fiber posts are the Luscent Anchors Glass Post (Dentatus) and the RelyX Fiber Post (3M).

Answer:

Yes, anything that is harder than glass can cut glass (providing it has a sharp edge), and quartz is harder than glass.
Quartz has a Mohs hardness rating of 7, and glass a rating of 5.5, so quartz can most definitely scratch glass. If scratched deeply enough, the glass is cut.
