This appears to be a powder metallurgy question. It is possible to produce certain parts like gears, connecting rods and others starting from metal powders. Metal powder mixes for the required alloy composition is pressed in a suitable die to get a 'green' preformed component, which is near net shape of the final component. This is sintered and finally forged to get a densified, full strength, finished part. The advantages are: control of alloy composition, minimizing waste, and higher productivity.
