Question:

Figuring out differences in solders.?

I have various Solder Coils (ie. No Package or Spool) from various projects over the years. Is there a way to figure out which ones are for Metal,Cooper or General Purpose?

Answer:

Rosin core is smaller and used for electronics. The larger is usually for pipes and such that a flux is brushed on the surfaces that you intend to solder with a torch. I would find a way to recycle these as there is differences in the proportion of tin to lead that if you do enough welding, you would say that one is better for copper than sheet metal. Labels are a good thing.
Just as a generally rule most will work on any metal. For wiring purposes it's the smaller diameter stuff. But solder used for plumbing pipes is rosin core, so cut a piece and look at the end you can see the rosin core.
