Hello all, I have a 1994 automatic honda civic dx coupe a while back i got stuck up on a rock and cracked the transmission case directly on the bottom it's kind of more of a hole it's about the size of a dimei had put some jb weld on it and it held for about 9 months but then decided to start leakingI was wondering if anyone has had this problem before some tricks they did? ( I was told you cannot weld my transmission bein as it is aluminum.(the transmission is stock) I was pricing them found one for a 380 but wanted to give something another shot before i pay that and than pay to have it installedALL ANSWERS GREATLY APPRECIATED (;
A - Aluminum can be welded B- As someone suggested you can purchase a used transmission at a junk yard for about $100 and have it installed, or install it yourselfAutomatic transmission isn't all that hard to doCYou can do something similar to what you've done already What happened with your repair, is that over time the transmission fluid acts as a mild solvent to the JB epoxy Depending on where the damage is located, I would suggest is that you purchase a piece of thin metal flashing (galvanized steel or aluminum) at Home Depot for a couple dollars, cut a piece (scissor or tin snips) just slightly larger than the size of the damageWhile you are at Home Depot, pickup a tube of white plumbers epoxy in a single tubeYou just break off a piece and kneed it togetherIt is not messy, and is workable, cures in 15 minutes, to a rock hard.plasticThen, clean the area you are going to apply the repair to, and do a final wipe with alcoholBreak off an inch of the epoxy, kneed it together until it turns a solid white colorHold the cut piece of aluminum tightly against the damaged area on the housing, and press the epoxy over it, spreading it 1/2 to 1 inch beyond the aluminum patchDon't make it too thin, as all epoxies cure by heat generated during a chemical reaction, and the thicker it is, the better it will cure You can shape it, form it, drill it, or sand it This will take care of the problem with the fluid coming in contact with the epoxy, and will prevent contamination of you fluidsAfter it is thoroughly cured, you can paint the repair with an aluminum colored spray paint, and nobody will ever notice it, especially after you have a little street grease and road dirt accumulation on it If you have a hang-up about using plumbers epoxy on an automobileyou can use a gas tank repair kit from any auto supplyWarning, they are messyGood luck Edit: Make sure you hands are really clean of all grease before kneeding the epoxy.
All will become known tomorrow, October 14thUntil then, no one outside of Apple knows anything for sure.
