Question:

Fixing a transmission?

Is fixing or replacing a transmission possible by hand/or at home? Would fixing it by hand cost more than getting a auto shop or having a mechanic to do it?

Answer:

Without the proper tools and knowledge replacing a transmissions can be a difficult task. Repairing a transmission takes expertise. It's more expensive to take it to a shop, but if you are unsure of what you're doing you'll end up at a shop anyway and have wasted money and time in getting there.
Manual trans? any reasonably skilled DIY can handle most MT repairs. Automatic? They require a lot more knowledge to service safely and correctly. There are compressed springs in there that can cause serious injury to you or any one or any thing close to you if they are not correctly caged before removing the locking rings! Unless you have been professionally trained. I do not recommend that any DIY attempt to perform any internal transmission service. R R is within the range of a skilled DIY with a friend to assist and a rented transmission jack! I rebuilt the transmission on my Dodge Caravan at a total cost of about $500 in parts, including a new torque converter and jack rental. It took about 4 hours to remove, 4 hours to rebuild and 4 hours to reinstall . but I was the transmission specialist for 6 years at a dealership!
It is possible at home if you know what you're doing But I would definitely recommend you take to a shop
