Question:

Gas Boiler (Burnham)?

I have a Gas boiler and would like to know the proper temperature setting. My hot water heater is set to 120* and I would like to know the appropriate setting for the Boiler. Does anyone have any idea? I have been looking online for a manual but cannot find one. Please help!

Answer:

A boiler and a water heater are two different animals, the former can be dangerous (read deadly) to an inexperienced operator. No responsible person is going to advise you without knowing which you have.
Your question is really not clear. On domestic hot water the code on either a zone with an indirect water heater coming off of your boiler or a stand alone water heater is 120 degrees max, therefor requires a mixing valve. If you are talking about the boiler temp. it depends on the home and how the system is set up, but baseboard radiation ratings are all based on 180 degrees.
This info is for a gas fired hot water heater only and not a gas fired boiler to heat the house. The normal setting for domestic hot water is 140 deg. especially if you have a dish washer. One thing to remember if you live in the cold country that every time you open a hot water faucet you put cold water into the tank, this will cool down the water fast thus depleting the amount of hot water you will have to use. Also another note, a 30 gallon water heater will only deliver about 20 gallons of hot water, this on like a full flow when you fill a bath tub. after that the rest will be warm. If the time ever comes to replace the heater it will be best to buy a 40 gallon heater the cost is not that much more for the heater. The setting on the heater thermostat should be: warm=120, normal=140, hot=160. 140 water will burn you as will 160. if you have small children watch them when they use 140 degree water. You can add cold water to cool it down.
