Question:

Get a transmission replacement or new car?

I‘ve heard numerous times, when the transmission fails, get rid of the car. But I have a close relative who has replaced their transmission numerous times and added years on every time. And it has always been a USED transmission they have gotten, never new. So, I want to get a used transmission to replace my failed one. I know I won‘t have this car for much longer than around 2 more years so I figure it‘s okay. The car was $2000, and the transmission replacement will cost $1200 (because we know the person doing it). The car is a 97 honda accord. I would love any knowledgable answers with explanations of why you say so. Thank you so much!!!!!!! :)

Answer:

Clean the contacts on the switch, or buy a new one.
1200 dollars does not buy much of a car these days. For many cars on the market this is less then the sales tax. Lets face it there are those that pay more then that just for rims to put on a car. So if the body is good, I would suggest replacing the transmission is the best investment right now.
have a look at used cars similar to the one you have, and compare the prices to the cost of the transmission replacement. You could be better off changing car rather than repairing it, if you can get a good price for the parts from your current car. I would only consider changing the transmission if the rest of the car is in good shape, because you don't want to replace the transmission only to have something else go wrong. Also consider that if you are selling the car in 2 years you will not get back the $1200 you spent on the transmission. If I was in your position I would break up your current car, sell the parts and put the money towards a replacement car, because at that age I don't think it is worth spending that much on a repair, when you could replace the car for $800 more
