Question:

Good feed and supplements?

I have a 13 year old QH gelding. He is and has lived his whole life at grass 24/7 and is doesn‘t need to put on weight. He is currently fed 2.5 scoops of Lucerne Chaff, 3/4 of a mini scoop Dolomite, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup/scoop Equilibrium and Apple Cider Vinegar I am currently introducing Apple Cider Vinegar, he‘s been on it for about 4 - 5 weeks and isn‘t at all fussed about the taste. I was wondering if he needs any other vitamins/minerals. Should I also add some Wheaten Chaff into his meals. I know about introducing slowly and everything. Please no rude answers/comments about what I am feeding. It is personal choice and these feeds have been recommended to me.

Answer:

What your horse needs depends on his weight, his exercise, the environment (the grass and forage in your area will have different minerals then other places) and much more so nobody can say for sure wat your horse needs. All I can say is to put a salt block and mineral block out in pasture for his own use.

I would like to know why you have so many things in his feed, rather than just getting a good complete feed with everything he needs and a free choice mineral block. I really don't see the point in feeding a horse a+b+c+d+e+f+g when you can simply just feed h and it does the same thing as feeding him a ton of different things. I personally think (and because I was this way) that to many horse owners go Oh I think I need to add this and this and this oh and how about this but when asked why it is usually more for their own personal gain (meaning they do it just to make themselves feel better, maybe isn't their intention, but is essentially that reason). Like I wanted to keep my mare on a textured feed and would use the excuse that she didn't like pelleted feed, when in reality I had never tried her on pelleted feed and it was my own wanting because I liked the look and smell of textured feed. Also I my trainer is constantly stopping me from buying any and every kind of supplement. She doesn't need any of them except the one she is on (Mare Magic, and that was after it was determined by my vet that she needed some sort of hormone regulating supplement and I wanted to try that before putting her on Regu-mate), but my silly brain goes oh she could use this! when in reality there is no basis for it. IMO stick with a good complete feed like Purina Strategy. It was developed by animal nutritionists to be a balanced feed for animals, so that you don't have to keep adding unnecessary things. I'm not trying to be rude but maybe it was time you sat down with your vet, who should know your horse or at least be able to examen the horse to determine what its nutritional needs are, and let them direct you towards a good feed instead of just throwing everything you can into the pot.
