Question:

Gun rust/ copper test.?

Ok, I've been told that you can tell if red residue on your gun's bolt is rust or copper by taking a copper solvent-sprayed cloth and running it through. And that rust will stain the cloth red and copper will stain the cloth blue/green. What does it mean if the cloth turned black? Or comes out clean? The bolt still has red tinge to it.-- I use Remington Britebore.

Answer:

What gun? Can't you people learn to ask a thorough question? I don't understand running it through. Are you trying to clean the inside of the bolt? I doubt you will have copper on the bolt, you will have copper fouling inside the barrel. Whatever is on the bolt will be rust or accumulated crud. If the cloth turns black it means it was dirty. If the cloth comes out clean it means it was not dirty. If the red tinge on your bolt will not clean off it probably is rust. Try 0000 steel wool and BreakFree.
Ummmmm - the only way you are gonna get copper on a bolt is if you have been closing the thing on pennies or putting the bullets/rounds in backwards. I have been shooting for decades - I cannot think of one time the copper part of any projectile has actually touched the bolt. Brass - is a mix of copper. Anything that detects copper will also show positive for brass too. Most folks use a copper brush to clean the chamber, bolts and barrels - so - it would be no shock to see a positive result. All things being equal ............. If you dont like the looks - get a brass brush and work the bolt clean, and if that isnt enough then go with a stainless steel brush - and brush the surface.
