Question:

Have 1997 York package unit (combo AC + furnace). If heat exchanger is going, repair or replace unit? Brand?

Since A/C furnace both work fine, should I repair even though 12 years old? Will new systems really be more efficient save on bills? What to look for in package units that sit outside in KY? What are critical features to look for?

Answer:

That is why you should always get mutiple estimates. Some people will say you need a new system just so they can install a new system. If your going to replace the system you should check into a geothermal system. They are very cost effective to operate and there are tax rebates available to offset the cost.
I would replace it, a new model will be more efficient and if you replace the heat exchanger, it will be only a short time later and it will be something else. If I really had to, I would only replace the exchanger if I could do it myself and not have to pay the labor charge.
