Question:

Have black flakes in my transmission fluid?

Have black flakes in my transmission fluid I don‘t think they are metal flakes as when wiped on a paper towel they smear. Is this a sign that I need a transmission fluid flush?

Answer:

That's pretty normal wear. Change fluid according to schedule or when it's deep brown and stinky.
this is the latest con game going the last few years with those oil change lube and screw places. If your transmission fluid has been changed regularly you will not need a flush ever. In your case black flakes is not a good sign but if the fluid itself is still reddish and does not smell burnt I suggest getting the system flushed but nu a competent mechanic. Not some kid out of high school that does not know what he is doing. There is a right way to do a fluid exchange and a wrong way. You need to get the pan gasket off the bottom of the transmission and the filter then follow manufacturers procedure. After that you put a new filter and pan gasket and fill the transmission to manufacturers recommendations. I don't know why black specs would be in a transmission fluid as a guess the tranny may have high mileage and may ne getting old. But you would know that netter than I
