Question:

Heat exchanger area equation?

How can I calculate the area of the shell and tube heat exchanger? Assuming I know the length, number of tubes, inner and outer diameters. Is this correct?A=(pi*r^2)/4-(no.tubes*(pi*r^2)/4)Thanks Many thanks

Answer:

you have one medium in the tubes and the other in the shell . As I see it the area between them can be defined as A = PI x D (circumference) x L(length) x N(no of tubes) one medium sees an area of tube surface where D is the outside diameter other medium sees an area of tube surface where D is the inside diameter there is a third heat transfer defined by A = PI x (D1+D2)/2 (avg circumference) * (D1-D2)/2(wall thickness) x L(length) x N(no of tubes)
