Question:

Heat exchanger is gone in my furnace?

OK, so this is a follow up question to my previous one where I said my furnace was blowing out cold air.The repair tech that came out said my heat exchanger is cracked. I told him that I replaced the original heat exchanger 4 years ago and the tech said that since the heat exchanger has a faulty design (which is on the manufacturer) a replaced heat exchanger is only good for about 5 years. He sugguested I get the entire furnace replaced and that putting a 2nd replaced heat exchanger in the furnace will cost you additional labor costs as well as going through the same problem again in a few years. Is this guy telling me something honest? or should I pursue in getting the heat exchanger replaced again?

Answer:

Since your heat exchangers are failing in 4 years, it sounds like the guy was telling the truth. If it were me, I'd bite the bullet replace the furnace. You might look into higher efficiency furnaces while you're at it.
The only way you'd know for sure would be to get a second estimate done by another reputable company. And frankly, if I were laying out that sort of cash, I'd definitely get 2 or more estimates before settling on a repair.
I even have been setting up those for 15 years and not in any respect heard this sort of ingredient, besides the shown fact that it does bring up one difficulty. If the furnace is used some condensate might proceed to be contained in the secondary warmth exchanger, subsequently freezing this condensate might reason the warmth exchanger to amplify and crack. thrilling theory. i could additionally assume that the condensate isn't organic water, yet crammed with different components using technique of burning organic gas or propane and could subsequently have a decrease freezing temperature than organic water. i won't be able to see any temperature above freezing inflicting any harm.
You might do well to call the manufacturer and ask if this is a common problem on this model. I've only see a couple of cases of a heat exchanger lasting only a few years, then having the same problem again a few years later. If you contact the mfr and complain about the short exchanger life, and the labor expense to replace it, they may be willing to offer a replacement furnace. Threatening a complaint to the BBB may help also. If that doesn't work, and you're stuck with resolving the problem yourself, I'd consider replacing the entire furnace. Most furnaces today have a minimum 10 year heat exchanger warranty, some of them have lifetime warranties, on the exchanger only. I wouldn't put any more money into that furnace. 20+ yrs HVAC tech.
Something is rotten in Denmark. Call the manufacturer.
