Question:

heat exchanger...parallel or countercurrent?

theoretically counter-current flow in a double is more efficient, but which of these two are prefered in the INDUSTRY?

Answer:

The countercurrent design, being more efficient, is by far the most commonly used.
Counter-current is used most often because of it's greater efficiency, but exact applications depend on fluids and temperatures involved, along with several other factors.
