Question:

HELP! How much is a transmission?

I am thinking about getting a 2005 Nissan Murano. It is an SL and has leather, heated seats, navigation, and all the other bells and whistles. However, it needs a new transmission. It is $5000 and I am wondering how much a transmission is so I know if I can afford it. Thanks!

Answer:

You should call a local transmission shop and see what the cost is for the transmission and the installation.
Almost 10 yrs. old, how many miles on odometer? If over 100,000, give it a pass, not worth it, unless you want to put junkyard trans. in yourself.
That's outrageously overpriced - if indeed it does need a new transmission. Who told you that, anyway? You can't get a new one, but you could get a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission installed for roughly $3,500 at the dealership or $2,000 at a transmission shop. Unless it's a CVT, then figure $5,000 and $4,000. That sounds like a horrible deal for you. Think about it - if the vehicle was abused or neglected to the point where it needs a new transmission already, the engine and suspension are soon to fail also. AVOID.
