we have a large rear garden, which runs from our cottage to the village mere, we have always left it as grass to allow our 3 children space to let them run about etc, but now they are growing up we as a family want to create a more structured space, and include maybe decking, paving a fire pit etc, but I have no idea where to get inspiration from!! are there any websites any one is aware of that show you before and afters, or ideas to help do this? we would probably carry out the work ourselves rather than get someone in. thanks.

If I had a garden I would put in a swinging chair, a tent or little nook to entertain a few guests in, maybe get a beat up van, paint a beautiful mural on it then mod it up inside to have a bed then put it in the garden as a decor or chill out spot, plant a huge colorful flower bonanza so that every guest that walks in and sees will be flabbergasted. You could plant so many things as well and useful plants like sage and hibiscus to give to guests as tea when they come over

You can find websites to help you do certain things but I think you need software to plan an entire garden. You can do it with graph paper by hand. First consult with the family and get a list of exactly you want in the space. Next get graph paper that has 1 square for every foot of the property then using those measurements sketch in the length and width of the lot. On another page sketch in, in scale your hardscape--deck, paths, firepit --anything that is going to be permanent. You could do a circle for the firepit and squares that you can put together for the paths and deck. Then do anything else you want to add like benches and tables and seating. Cut them all out and place them on the graph of your lot. Now imagine greenery around things. You will probably change things around several times until you get it set the way you want before you add in the greenery. Play with things and changes for a while and remember that once the hardscape goes down it is more or less permanent. Once things are the way you want it make it permanent on your lot graph so you have a blueprint to work with when you are doing the work. This is exactly what I did when planning my multi level deck and patio. I planned and changed plans for most one winter. By the time summer came I had all my plans drawn and it went together like clockwork and I was extremely pleased with the result. The biggest and best chore is the planning.
