Question:

HELP! The heat in our apartment isn't working, and it's -7 with wind chill!! What could be the problem?

Its -7 with the wind chill, and our heat is blowing only cold air in the apartment. The thermostat is not registering the temperature. The maintenance is conveniently out of the office until wednesday and I am worried the pipes are going to bust again like they did last year and flood the apartment. The auto button has never worked on our thermostat, but now when we turn it to heat and push the temperature gauge to 90 it still only blows cold. I have called the complex twice and they keep telling me they cant help me until wednesday when they open, this is miserable. I think it may just be the thermostat. PLEASE HELP if you know anything about heating/ac!!! Thank you!

Answer:

Jump the thermostat. Take the thermostat face plate off to get to the sub-base and remove the r and w wires and connect them together. This will ignite the furnace but you will have to unhook them when you want it to stop. Edit: There will be a small shock from the wires. You can use an insulated copper wire to connect between the r and w terminal on the sub-base. or put on gloves to twist the wires together
Theory # 1 When God created Human, God whispered in each human's ears that you are the most intelligent person that I have created. Thus, when we come on the earth, we tend to think that all others are fool and we are the most intelligent. We have right to know everything on this earth, and no one else must know what we know. That is why, each one makes his or her best efforts to his his/her secret, while making best efforts to know others secrets. Now, whether you blame it on God or Blame it on Human Nature, wish is your..... Theory # 2: Every one would want to keep what s/he has with them as an asset and on the other hand grab stuff from others, this is true with materialistic stuff. I believe this applies to none materialistic stuff too. And secrets are none materialistic stuff. I have given two theories but I am inclined towards first theory more. I would leave up to you whichever one you like, but I have done the task to 2 users. :)
our company manages over 12,000 units and all the properties have 24-7 maintenance for emergencies ,no heat is consider a emergency , I can't believe they don't have that service , I would call your local housing authority and make a complaint with them about your situation , your talking no heat for 5 or 6 days that's terrible .does your thermostat have emergency heat setting on it ?have you turned off the breaker and see if that resets it ?might not be getting full 220v to run the element the blower only takes 110v or maybe the element wire broke and its shot and needs replacing.don't wait until the office is open, monday morning call your local housing authority and tell them how long its been and what the office says , thats BS, good luck. PS call your local news paper and tell your story to them also.
Seeing as how you do not own your own home and are renting, the complex where you live is responsible for getting things fixed in a timely manner. Wednesday is unacceptable given the current conditions. Look at your lease, if you have a copy....I'm pretty sure that they have broken it which means you don't pay rent until the problem is fixed. Also, get in touch with your city's Housing Commission explain the problem to them. I'm willing to bet that making you wait until Wednesday is against the law under these conditions of intense cold. Also, look into hauling their a$$es into court for negligence (they are neglecting the upkeep of the basic necessities....heat!) which in turn leads to frozen burst pipes, which then leads to you having to move out of your place until the pipes are fixed and them spending money to fix it all and make it livable again. It is totally insane that you have to go through this again. And take pictures! If I were you, I would move at the first opportunity because if this happened last year too, then it sounds like the Management of the complex is below standard.
