Question:

Help with gardening!?

My 9 year old girl wants a garden. We live in MN and want a garden that produces things fairly fast. Any suggestions?

Answer:

Cucumbers and summer squash always ripen first in our garden, cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes ripen faster than the larger varieties
Why don't you try hanging baskets. I found some tomato plants that already had produce. Mint plants grow fast. Onions are easy.
Get one of those strawberry hanging planters (the upside down strawberry planters). Get the eversweet strawberries. They will flower very soon. They will have flowers and fruit year round and they will be above ground keeping off slugs and other pests. Radishes are good for planting in the ground from seed, they grow rapidly, and are ready for picking soon. The only negative is that kids usually aren't thrilled about eating them. Tomatoes are beautiful and grow large fairly rapidly. I think everyone should grow a few tomato plants since there is such a huge difference between store bought tomatoes and home grown. THey might take longer to get fruit from, but I think it would be a good lesson to your daughter at an early age about the benefit of home gardening. Also, I think she'd get a kick out of the wonderful smells of the tomato plant.
