Question:

Home remodel what do I do first?

We purchased a house and we need to make some upgrades. My daughters room has old windows that blow cold air into her roomThey are currently covered in plastic for the winterWell one of my first things on my list of home improvements is her windowsI also wanted to remove the old vinyl siding, put up new weather proofing foam re-side it with concrete siding. Is it easier to do the windows first then siding or the other way around?Another upgrade is the basementI want to finish itBut during the summer the pipes sweat causing moisture I understand a dehumidifier would help but how can I tell where the moisture is coming from? What do I look forI don't see obvious water damage on the walls?? And I don't want to hang dry wall and in a few months notice mold!Any advice?? THANKS!

Answer:

If you want to start saving money right away, check the attic insulation firstYou can rent a insulation blower or get to use it free if you buy the insulation at lowe's or Home DepotNext check for insulation in the walls - you might not have anyIf you don't then plan to do this after you rip of the old siding and before you install the newFor her windows, just carefully remove the trim pcs on the insideThen measure between the wall studs on each side of the window and from bottom sill of framing to under the window header across the topGo to home center and tell them you need either a stock replacement window that fits this rough opening (measurements you took of the existing window hole ), or if no stock window will fit, then you want to price a custom fit replacement windowYou would want to replace the windows prior to installing new sidingAs far as the basement goes - start with getting some air movement down thereGet those old basement steel sash windows so they can open once in awhile in the spring/summer/fallIt might be your ductwork that is sweating, You can wrap it with insulation as well as the cold water lines to stop the condensationMake sure your downspouts extend out away from your house 3-4' so water isn't running back toward the basement walls.
