Question:

How best to clean marks on copper?

I have a copper canope above my fire but the copper has blue/green streaks. Standard brass/copper cleaner ( Brasso ) doesn't shift it. Any ideas ?

This won't be a neat fix but it will work. Get a can of Barkeeper's Friend. It's a powdered cleanser that is similar to scouring powder but not nearly as harsh and is wonderful on all metal! It's cheap and you can find it in a lot of grocery, hardware and discount stores. The cheapest place I've found it is WalMart. Dampen the canopy with a microfiber cloth and give it a good sprinkle. Take a sponge and work the product around an area evenly and walk away for about 10 minutes. Then come back and with the same damp sponge start polishing/scrubbing. Use a microfiber cloth to remove the dirty residue. Microfiber cloths wipe more thoroughly than anything else; otherwise you will be chasing smears for a week. I'd also suggest covering the stove with an old towel just to keep the mess from spreading. After you get the tarnish all off, take the wet microfiber cloth and really wipe the hood down and dry with a soft cloth to prevent spotting. If the copper is really tarnished, it's going to take a good deal of scrubbing but the Barkeeper's does work. I picked up a solid copper bowl at a sale and it was awful. Took several sessions with the cleanser to get it shiny but it looks wonderful now! Regular use will keep your canopy looking wonderful. I use the Barkeeper's on all my metals; stainless steel, copper, brass, silver and it works faster and more thoroughly than anything I've found. I also use it on my ceramic top range to clean those sneaky burned on spots. It's that gentle!
