Question:

How can Elmers Rubber Cement harm you if your pregnant, there is a warning on the bottle.?

The bottle on elmers rubber cement has a warning not to use if pregnant or contemplating being pregnant, and I am 5 weeks, what could the side effects be? I used it for aprox a half hour of time.

Answer:

The fumes are toxic and dangerous to anyone, and can cause brain damage. In pregnancy, inhaling toxic substances can be dangerous to the fetus. The chemicals are absorbed through the blood vessels in your nose, and then go through your blood to the placenta, and then into your baby's bloodstream. In general, pregnant women are advised to avoid harsh, strong smelling chemicals. Many can cause birth defects. It would probably take more than just a short exposure, but who knows? Why take the chance?
How did your baby turn out? I'm 9 weeks and did something similar:(
I would assume the strong smell. Side effects probably birth deffects etc etc same with everything else
Most likely toxicity from the odor, if used over a long period of time (like when abusing / sniffing glue).
Rubber cement contains a chemical called benzene. It is a known reproductive hazard. It evaporates and can be inhaled. You would probably need to use the product for a long term or consciously inhale it. I doubt a half hour in an open air room would cause harm to your baby, but let your doctor know if it worries you.
