Question:

Driving with bad bearings?

Took my car to the mechanic yesterdcay because it was occasionally making grinding noise when turning right they said its the bearings and i don't have the money to get it fixed til next wendesday. I have to drive to school on tuesday which is an hour from my house...will it be dangerous to take this trip before getting it fixed? The car is a 2003 dodge neon

Answer:

my opinion, yes it would be dangerous to drive it, for one it could lockup and cause an accident causing bodily harm to you and others. Also if the bearings seige it will cause addional damage to your vehical and result in a more expensive repair.
sounds like a bad right front cv axle, if the noise isn't real bad you should be ok until wednesday.
You should be ok for a day drive. Better avoid freeways for your safety incase broken bearing stalls the wheels. Find the replacement from salvage which I have seen are cheap and good.
If it's just grinding once in a while on turns and going straight down the road the bearings are quiet, you should be OK. Just don't keep driving it like that because the bad bearings can ruin the spindle or they can really let go and scare the shitt out of you. Not the safest thing to do so drive with caution and I would not be going over 50 mph.
