Question:

How can I attractively weigh down driftwood?

I have some pieces of driftwood that I was hoping to put in my fish tank that simply won't stop floatingThe pieces are too large to boil, so I've made the decision to weigh them down in the tankI have some cool rocks, but I'm looking for interesting and attractive ideas to help weigh those suckers downI'd like to stay away from metal screws or glues, is there any other way to weigh them down? Is there a type of string any of you use in your fish tanks that's fish-safe? Thanks for the help!

Answer:

wrap them in duct tape.
In addition to the other answers here, I always make sure the plugs are not laying on the ground.
I take a bread wrapper and cut off 1 end and plug them in and use twist ties to tie ends tight.Even if the cords are outdoor rated I do this GL
I buy flat sandstone or slate from the local landscaping supply, drill some holes through it and use stainless steel screws or nylon screwsWorks greatNever use brass or galvanized screwsThey are toxicPlain steel screws rust and can stain items in the tank, even the glass or acrylic, but the rust is harmless to fish and plants, just ugly and they rust away to nothingNylon yarn and mono-filament fishing line are two safe strings you can useIf you use string, drill a couple holes horizontally near the bottom of the driftwood and thread string throughIf you have the holes drilled low enough, a little gravel will cover the stringAnother possibility is to drill a big hole in the bottom of the driftwoodFill it with aquarium gravel and while still upside down pour fiberglass resin into the hole to embed the gravel permanently in placeUnless you have some leftover resin from some other project, it's too expensive a route to take if you had to buy the resin just for thisBy the way boiling softens the wood fibers and causes much more yellow tannins to leach out into the waterI either set the wood outside in my woodlot where there are no chemicals for a season, or rinse the wood with hot tap water before useThat is all you need to do to kill bad bacteria and leach out surface tannins.
