Question:

How can i gear down a garage door opener motor so that it can lift 300 pounds?

im tryinging to build a small roller coaster and for the lift hill i thought a garage door opener which i have laying around would be able to lift the car but im not sure. the motor says 1/3 horse power. and how can i gear it down to do the job? PLSS HELPPP. I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GEARS SO IF U GUYS CUOLD TELL ME HOW TO PUT THEM TOGETHER CORRECTLY AND WHERE TO BUY THEM WOULD BE GREAT.

Answer:

More than gearing, it’s about load bearing capacity of door opener in other directions Though 300 pounds or about 136 kgs is not very high to try, better leave it alone as it may fail after few trials and damage other components of door opener Instead, you may opt for a simple pulley block hanged to roof to lift the car which is cheap and effective method
