I use CareFresh for my mice, and my dog has a normal dog bedIt is safe but I wouldn't recommend using it for a puppy.
If you're just planning on using it as a cushion, then I think i'd just buy the dog a dog bed that was washableIn my experience, (I've used CareFresh with a rabbit) it was actually pretty dusty, which it isn't supposed to be, and very messyIf I needed an alternative, I think I'd actually shred up newspaper or use low dust cedar bedding (smells nice for dogs, but absolutely don't use cedar for bunnies!) before I'd use CareFreshBut, like I said, I think a bed would serve just as well without all the dust and mess sticking tot he puppy's fur.
Why would you even want to use it? Just use a regular crate pad or dog bedCareFresh is made for rodents, not dogsI don't understand why you would want to use it to begin withMost crate pads are easy to cleanCareFresh is not going to make the puppy more comfortableI would think a nice bed or crate pad would be a lot more comfortableI use crate pads with a thick foam inside of them and my dogs love them! DrsFoster and Smith sells wonderful crate padsUntil your puppy is fully housebroken, I don't recommend paying a lot of money for a dog bed.
If you find the Aspen too messy, you can try Yesterday's NewsThey sell it in the small animal litter section, but you can get lots more for a better bargain if you get the big bag from the cat litter sectionJust remember to get unscented! I use it for my ratties and it is superb at odor and liquid absorptionThe pellets are also heavier than aspen shavings so they don't get flung so far out of the cageJust be careful when you get closer to the bottom of the bag because it can get dusty near the endJust allow some time for any dust to settle before putting animals back in itMy rats were on aspen but they seem happier with YN (and no more sneezing!)
