Question:

How can I put a hole in a ceramic pot?

I‘ve noticed that many of the ceramic pots/planters on the market this year don‘t come with a hole at the bottom. I bought a few that are beautiful, but they‘re useless if they hold water and my roots will rot.Anyone know of a good way to make a hole in the bottom without breaking the pot? Will a standard electric drill bit work?

Answer:

I personally keep my cats indoors to prevent them getting parasites, diseases, coming into contact with cruel children, being stolen, being hit by cars, etc. If I ever decided to have outdoor cats, I would definitely take certain precautions - microchip them and vaccinate them against everything they could possibly get in this area. However, my stress level would rise significantly. Being a worry-wart, I would worry about them until the moment they came home. When I was a toddler, my mother had a cat that would go outdoors in the evening and come back in the morning. Well, one day he never came back. We had no form of closure, because we had no idea what happened to him. It was awful. At least whenever my own cats pass away, I'll know that they are dead, and won't be worrying about what their fate was. For me, the risks of allowing cats to be outdoors (especially in a city), far outweighs the benefits. If I lived on a farm or something, I'd let them roam around, and just be careful whenever a machine is started, and hope that they have the sense to stay away from large animals with hooves. There are more dangers in cities, and I want to keep my cats safe.
It depends where you are. Rule of thumb, if you have a real winter, the branch panel at least goes inside, usually the basement, attached garage, or utility room. It does not go into a clothes closet. Perhaps your electrician just wants it accessable (by code, it needs to be), which the closet prevents such access. Outside is probably the best place for your home. Buildig/electrical/fire code may require it now be outside.
In addition to the three good answers you already have, be sure to have someone on hand to pour water on the pot while using the masonry bit. This will keep it from breaking due to the high temperature generated by the friction of the bit!

A hole of almost any size can be sucessfully drilled into glass, ceramic tile, ceramic pots or even into the side of a glass bottle using this method. Get some ordinary glazing putty. Then build a dam around the area where you want to drill the hole into . The dam needs to be about 1/4 inch high. Then take and put some motor oil into the dam to which is added a generous amount of abrasive compound. I use coarse rubbing compound. Then take a piece of steel tubing and put it into a drill press and begin to drill. The abrasive will fall into the cut and continue to abrade as you lift and lower the tubing while the drill press is at about medium speed. It takes about 15 minutes to go thru a sheet of glass and about 10 minutes to go thru a ceramic pot that is about 3/16 thick. If you use a cement drill it will shatter the glass or the ceramic pot. You can even cut a hole say 3 inch diameter into ceramic by taking a tin can and mounting a bolt thru the top to go into the drill press chuck and using this same method of the build up of putty dam, oil and abrasive in the oil. This is an old method that was used for centries to drill those 3 inch holes into glass at movie theatres.
